The time to get chickens is in the Spring. Some people choose to get pullets.
Pullets are available at your local feed store. Pullets are young hens getting read to lay eggs. If you are in a hurry to get fresh eggs then pullets are probably a good choice for you. Other people choose to get chicks. In the Spring chicks are available at your local feed store or you can order chicks online from hatcheries like Murray McMurray.
Chicks are normally ordered a few months before spring. What’s nice about ordering chicks online is there is a large variety of different chicken breeds available. If you are wanting blue or green eggs you can order chicks like an Americana or if you want dark chocolate colored eggs, order Marans. You can choose from full sized chickens or much small bantams. You can also choose if you want a “straight run” which is both male and females, “males only” which are just that male chicks only, or “females only” and you will only get hens.
After your order is placed you will be given a delivery date. It’s very important you be home one this day. Early morning the date of delivery you will get a phone call from the post office and will be able to hear “cheeping” in the background. You’ll have to drive down to the post office and pick up your chicks.

I love raising chicks, they are a little more work but are really worth the effort especially if you have young children. It’s a great experience for the entire family.
