Before planning to build your new chicken coop, you should decide a few things. How many chickens are you wanting to keep and do you want full sized breeds or Bantams?
Full sized hens will need approximately two square feet of personal space and an additional three square feet or so of yard space to run around in. Some people choose to let their birds free range and this is easy to accomplish providing you don’t have neighborhood dogs who like to attack chickens. Confine your full grown chickens to their hen house for at least six weeks, after six weeks open the hen house door, chickens may be reluctant to venture outdoors at first but will soon go out on their own. What’s great about letting chickens free range is they will start heading back to their roosting area inside the hen house when the sun starts setting. At first you may have to gather up any chickens who appear to be be lost but eventually they’ll get it down.
The more chickens you have the more space is necessary. In addition to personal hen and roo space the poultry will also need a roost, nesting boxes for laying eggs and a feeding and watering area.
Its always best to give your flock more space than required. Chickens can be down right mean to each other, especially in crowded conditions. There is always a “low man on the pole” the bird all the chickens like to peck at or bully, this is where the term “hen pecked” comes from. Giving the chickens extra space to run away from tormentors is a good idea. Having an outside chicken run attached to the hen house is a wonderful way to give the birds extra space.
Chickens don’t require a lot of head room since they aren’t very tall. How much space per chicken? About three feet high is all they really need but if you want to be able to walk into the hen house then you will need a door big enough for you to get in and do some cleaning as well as egg gathering.
Chicken roost spacing: Your birds will be happy roosting all together. Just make sure their is enough roosting space so each bird is able to roost.
